Getting Teen Car Insurance on Their Own
Reader’s Question:
I am currently under my parent’s car insurance policy. I cant afford to get car insurance yet on my own since I am only 18 years old.. I live with my parents in Wisconsin but they are planning to move in Illinois. Can I stay on their auto insurance if I wont be living in the same household? I have my own vehicle.
Kenosha WI
Peters
No, it is not likely that your parent’s insurance policy will be able to continue to have you and your vehicle if they move out of state. The state of Illinois has different auto insurance liability requirements than the state of WI so that is one problem that may arise but also most all insurance companies will not cover an individual and the vehicle that is not part of the household. Since your vehicle will be garaged in Kenosha Wisconsin and not at the address of your parents then an insurance provider will not usually allow you or your vehicle to be covered on your parent’s insurance policy once they move, especially to a different state.
You can check if there are ways in which to lower the car insurance premium. You can look for car insurance discounts such as safety features on your vehicle for one. Other ways in which to obtain discounts may be taking a driver improvement course or safety course, some insurance company lower car insurance rates if you take approved traffic class. In addition if you are going to school and maintaining good grades some insurance companies give good student discounts.
How Much is a Teenage Driver Auto Insurance
Reader’s Question:
I have been thinking of enlisting my teenager in our auto insurance policy in Wisconsin. How costly can this be? What do I need to know?
Peter
Milwaukee, WI
Hello there, Peter!
I have to tell you in advance that adding your teenager to your insurance policy can really throw you for a loop. When you find out the cost of it insuring your teenage driver, you might be surprised.
Even if it can cost you a few dollars more, it is important however that you list your teenage driver on your insurance policy. This is because if you fail to list your teenager on your vehicle you could face having your policy canceled or not renewed and possible surcharges on your policy too. There could be some insurance companies can and will cancel your insurance policy for misrepresentation if you don’t list your teenager on your own auto insurance policy.
So if and when your teenager regularly drives your vehicle or any vehicle in your home, you better list in your own policy as one of the drivers. This ensures that your vehicle is covered by your insurance in the event that there is an incident while he or she is driving any of your cars. Next, this could also mean that your teenager will gain some valuable insurance experience in the process which will translate to some savings for your teenager when he or she gets their own vehicle and insurance.
So you can contact your local auto insurance agent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and ask for procedures you can do to enlist your teenager in your auto insurance policy.
Can a 17 Year Old Purchase Car Insurance?
Reader’s Question:
Can I purchase and insure a car if Im only 17 years old? I live in Wisconsin. Thank you.
Jean
Good question Jean.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation does not mention any type of restriction for age for purchasing a car or for registering one. The state statutes do discuss the issue of a minor buying a car though.
Section 218.0147 Subsection 1 of the WI statutes states that a minor may not purchase or lease any car unless he/she, at the time of purchase or lease, provides to the seller or lessor a written statement verified before a individual authorized to administer oaths and made and signed by either parent or a legal guardian.
If a minor have a parent or guardian who will sign a statement verifying that the minor has permission to buy the car, then a minor will be able to purchase a car.
You may contact with the WI DOT and Commissioner of Insurance if you want to get more information regarding laws in Wisconsin and verify if a teenager may be able to purchase and insure a motor vehicle and if so, what are the requirements you need to have.
Goodluck!
