Reader’s Question:

I’m from Milwaukee, WI. I got hit recently by another driver who was clearly at fault. He offered me to pay in cash for the damages rather than make a claim on his car insurance; is that okay?

Karen

Milwaukee, WI

It’s a bad idea to accept cash if you’re injured or if you even have a hint of being injured. Your PIP coverage should pay for your medical expenses and any lost wages that you may incur if you’re injured. Once your PIP is consumed, your health insurance will kick in and pay for the rest of your expenses. You can sue the at-fault driver to pay for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and any lost wages as a result of the crash if you do not have PIP or health insurance.

On the other hand, never take money on the spot if you choose to accept the other driver’s cash offer for the physical damage to your car. Be sure to know exactly how much it will cost to repair your vehicle. You could end up paying for a portion of the repairs yourself if you don’t get an accurate estimate, Say for example, the other driver offers you $1,000 to pay for damages and you later receive an estimate showing that the total cost is $1,500 to repair your car, you may have to kick in $500 of your own pocket.

It is also important for you to carefully examine any documents you may be required to sign that absolve the other driver of any further liability. If the at-fault’s party has consulted an attorney, it is likely that the attorney has drafted a document that will take away your right to sue later. If you are in doubt about signing the document, consult an attorney. Hiring a lawyer is an unavoidable expense that you’ll have to pay for. Always check your policy language for details so it’s advised to contact your Milwaukee, WI insurance agent to have a statute of limitations for reporting accidents.

Reader’s Question:

What can you suggest so that the SR22 filing that I would have to file will not be too costly?

Phoebe

Green Bay, WI

In Wisconsin, anyone driving a car is obliged to get car insurance by the law for protection. But if you just get yourself in a serious moving violation, you are going to be required by the law to file for an SR22 in Wisconsin on top of your regular auto insurance.

Typically, an SR22 Wisconsin costs a lot. Still there is no need for you to invest a lot for an SR22 premium even if it is mandated by the law. There are a number of insurance companies competing for the cheapest insurance rate so let take advantage of it and find the best SR22 insurance deal that suits your budget.

Insurers vary greatly with their insurance rates depending on certain factors. A statement such as the cheapest coverage may sound contradictory since a certain insurer offers a cheaper coverage for a certain group while others for the other type. Hence, a policy could only be cheaper if you have qualified for the conditions set by the insurer.

You can certainly rejoice over the stiff competition among insurers because it is giving us a chance to compare over their various offers. Nevertheless, we must be vigilant to these cheap SR22 Wisconsin packages that these insurance companies are claiming. Although a cheap coverage may not refer to a cheap quality but it could still be possible to happen under this circumstances.

Verify if the cheap policy that has been offered to you contains the necessary coverage that is applicable to you. If your cheap coverage contains low limit of liability coverage, then you might end up with an expensive insurance. Furthermore, you will also be paying the excess of your liability coverage in time of an at fault accident which would certainly be heavy on your pocket.

Reader’s Question:

I am required to carry an sr22 and I just want to know if this will cover just myself or anyone who uses my vehicle?

Justin

Thank you for asking Justin.

Typically, car insurance follows the motor vehicle first and the driver second. There are financial liability laws in most states so the motorist should also have had car insurance or they will end up with a conviction for driving with no insurance and have their license suspended or revoked until they get an SR22 or the financial responsibility certificate.

Normally, an SR22 is only liability insurance so it will likely cover the motor vehicle struck and damaged but not the at-fault vehicle’s damages.

To be certain what your specific SR22 policy covers contact your insurance company. They will be able to give you more information on what the sr22 covers.

Goodluck!

Reader’s Question:

Do I still need to carry an SR-22 insurance to get an occupational license in Wisconsin if I already have full car insurance?

Harry

Janesville, WI

In the state of WI, proof of financial responsibility should set a liability insurance in the amounts of at least $25,000 and $50,000 for personal injury or death and $10,000 for property damage. This proof of insurance is filed by obtaining an SR-22 certificate issued by an insurance company licensed to do business in WI. Substitutions, such as a bond from an insurance company or a cash deposit of $60,000 posted with the WI Department of Transportation (DOT) will be accepted in some cases.

An SR-22 is required by the state in order to obtain an occupational license or to reinstate a driver’s license after operating privileges or vehicle registration has been revoked. You can have more auto insurance than what the state requires as a proof of insurance but you will still need your insurer to file the SR-22 since it is a requirement for obtaining an occupational license. So even though you have full coverage, it does not matter since it is mandated by your state law.

I would suggest contacting WI DOT for more information on what is needed to get an occupational license in Janesville, Wisconsin. You will need to obtain new auto insurance coverages through an insurance carrier who does work with SR22s if your current insurance provider does not file the SR-22 form.

Readers Question:

Hello! Please give me a clear definition of car insurance. I think I need to buy a car in Wisconsin. Thank you.

Aubrey

Appleton, WI

Hi! Thank you as well for asking that question, dear. I’m sure you’re quite misled of these two terms. I perfectly understand since you’re so very young to be familiar in auto insurance. It seems too simple but we can not deny the fact that some are truly having misconceptions between the two. But actually there is no difference between auto insurance and car insurance. Car insurance is the term that we always use since it is widely understood by many people.

Auto insurance seems confusing if it is our fist time to inquire about this term. But once you understand the different types of coverage that make up your policy, it’s not hard at all. Your auto insurance is really a package you are looking for. Taken together, this coverage make up a standard auto policy. Each of this coverage has its own separate premium. No additional payment for separate premiums. You can also add coverage such as the coverage that will protect you from accidents along the road and service coverage that will provide you 24 hours toll-free assistance. Just be smart and read all the details of the insurance you are choosing.

Hope to hear from you, soon Aubrey! Good luck to your auto insurance search!

Reader’s Question:

I have always paid my bills on time and never had a problem with my car insurance. But, recently my MVR score got affected and I wasn’t given the cheapest rate by my insurance provider and I dont know why. I’ve heard rumors of new vehicles (especially red ones) increasing an individuals insurance. Is it true? My new vehicle is red. I live in Wisconsin.

Michael

Green Bay, WI

You might be confused with your Consumer Credit Report and MVR. Your MVR is a documents pertaining to your driving. It will include items such as if your driver’s license is current and if you have any insurance points. Points are generally given for a driving violation and the more points the worse your MVR. An insurance carrier checks your MVR to check how much of a risk you might be as a motorist. If your MVR has negatives on it, such as a a big number of points or prior license suspension it would most likely affect your insurance policy costs negatively.

Your consumer credit report in Wisconsin is a documentation that lists your credit history using information from financial institutions such as merchants, banks and other creditors. It has been studied and found that those with bad credit reports are more likely to file car claims thus their insurance rate might be higher than those with excellent credit histories.

How long do I have to carry SR22 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin?

John

Milwaukee, WI

You may contact the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) to verify for sure about your particular situation but normally in WI you will need to get and maintain a SR22 for three years.

According to the Wisconsin DOT, for the SR-22 proof of insurance, it must be filed for three years from the reinstatement eligibility date, or for 3 years from the court entry date of a damage judgment that was effective before September 1, 2000.In addition to that, this states also noted that if at any time during the three-year filing period, an individual wishes to stop filing insurance, and discontinue driving in Wisconsin, they can avoid paying the reinstatement fee in the future by surrendering their driver license to the Wisconsin DOT while the insurance is still in force.

Proof of financial responsibility in Wisconsin is certifying that you have liability insurance in the amounts of at least $25,000 up to $50,000 for personal injury or death per accident and $10,000 for property damage per accident (25/50/10).

Q: What is SR22 insurance for non owner drivers?

A: T he car insurance world often has options for everyone, from those with the highest risk and the oldest age, up to those who don’t even own a car. Even people who have no car in their name must be insured when they drive, though. In most cases, this would be covered by the car insurance of the owner of whatever car they are driving, but since SR22 requires you to have insurance to get your driver’s license back at all, you must get a different type of policy if you want to do this.

SR22 insurance for non owner drivers only allows the policy holders liability insurance. Although they can change the limits of this, they can never add on coverages, such as collision or comprehensive, because there is no car available by which to rate these policies.

Reader’s Question:

Is there a way I could know the points in my drivers license? I live in Wisconsin. Thank you.

William

Thank you for asking William.

If you want to get information for the points listed on your driver license or driving history you should check with your state’s department of motor vehicle, or like agency, in your case its the Department of Transportation website. This permits you to send off for your driving history by filling out a form either in person at the DMV office or online. You can also call over the phone and ask information about the your points through a special phone number in WI DOT.

Your motor vehicle record (MVR) includes identifying information about you, lists any licenses that have been issued to you, any infractions you have for moving violation and the points put on your record for these offenses and administrative entries regarding your driving privileges, which will include things such as license suspensions or revocations.

Reader’s Question:

Is it required for the motorist to have a liability insurance coverage? I live in Wisconsin.

Rain

Thank you for asking Rain.

Wisconsin has a financial responsibility law that pertains to any licensed drivers to operate a vehicle in Wisconsin. This law is intended to make sure all drivers operating a motor vehicle has car insurance or enough money to pay for damages to others that may have been caused by a motor vehicle accident. By acquiring an automobile liability insurance policy, a surety bond, personal funds or a certificate of self-insurance, these requirements may be met.

If the driver decides to satisfy the financial responsibility law requirements by purchasing car insurance there are certain minimum liability limits that must be bought. These limits include: $25,000 for injury or death of one person; $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people; and $10,000 for property damage. The law also requires uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$$50,000 for bodily injury liability coverage only.
